Tucked away in its own private landscaped courtyard at Lower Damgate Farm, The Alpaca Hut offers a totally unique and cosy retreat in the heart of the Peak District.

Designed to escape the world for a little bit, you can relax or explore the area from this charming hideaway with its own Hot Tub which is perfect for couples seeking a peaceful break from everyday life.

The beautifully presented hut features its own ensuite facilities, the bedroom is like a shepherd’s hut and includes a small kitchenette, with a microwave and air fryer, kettle, and toaster as well as a small fridge. There is also a smart TV and Wifi! It is thermally heated all year, thereby ensuring a comfortable stay in all seasons.

Step outside into your own landscaped private area with soft seating, a covered gazebo to bring your own BBQ, and unwind in your private hot tub, where a chilled bottle of fizz awaits your arrival – the perfect way to start your getaway. Whether you’re enjoying crisp winter evenings or long summer nights, The Alpaca Hut provides a snug and welcoming atmosphere all year round where on a good day star gazing and incredible sunsets join you.

Lower Damgate Farm is also home to Dovedale Animal Sanctuary, giving guests the special opportunity to meet and spend time with rescued alpacas and goats during their stay. Guests are welcome to collect eggs and share time with the animals. This unique countryside setting creates a calming, heartwarming experience that animal lovers will truly appreciate, many go away saying what a magical place this is.

Perfectly placed for exploring the Peak District, The Alpaca Hut is surrounded by National Trust land, with Ilam Park just down the hill in Ilam village. Iconic walks and viewpoints including Dovedale (and the stepping stones), Thorpe Cloud, Milldale, Thors Cave and Wetton Mill are all within walkable reach, many with tea rooms and great pubs nearby.

After a day out, return to your private retreat to relax, recharge, and enjoy the stunning scenery of your surroundings. There is also a communal area overlooking the peaks and animals, with a firepit to take in the ambiance of the farm.

For days out a little further afield, the market towns of Ashbourne, Hartington, Bakewell, and Buxton are a short drive away, along with standout attractions such as Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Alton Towers, Carsington Water, Poole’s Cavern, Luds Cave and The Roaches—plus plenty of excellent pubs, restaurants, and activity centres.

Access

Enjoy complete freedom during your stay on our peaceful Peak District farm.

Nestled between the valley of Dovedale and the Manifold rivers, both only a short walk away and with over 22 acres of private countryside on the farm, there’s plenty of space to explore, relax, and unwind in total privacy.

Feed the ducks by the pond, spend time with our friendly alpacas and goats, collect eggs, walk the small woods where you may meet a rescued hedgehog or say hello to our resident pheasants and other animals that choose to make the farm their home, or just come and take in the stunning views across the surrounding peaks and enjoy exploring our beautiful first National Park.

Picnic in one of our wildflower meadows (before hay season) or enjoy outdoor games in fields we mow regularly for guests.

Although there are a couple of other cottages on the farm, each has its own private garden and outdoor area.

The wider farm is communal, with lots of quiet spots to escape to—perfect for reading under one of our large trees, relaxing by the pond, enjoying a fire pit around the campfire, or simply enjoying the ambiance of the farm surrounded with its stunning scenery animals and glorious sunsets.

Your hot tub is completely private, giving you space to relax and enjoy uninterrupted time together.

The focus of your stay is relaxation and freedom. Whether you’re here for a romantic break or a getaway with family or friends, we want you to feel at home.

Our animals love attention—especially apples and carrots—and guests are welcome to help themselves to animal feed from the open container.

Lower Damgate Farm is also our family home, and we live in the farmhouse further down the drive. You’ll have your own private space, but you may see us around the farm as we care for the rescued animals at Dovedale Animal Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to alpacas, goats, ponies, sheep, ducks, geese, and chickens (and occasionally other rescues). We also have a few friendly pets—our small dogs and cats sometimes pop by to say hello.

We’re easy to reach if you need anything during your stay, and we’re always happy to share local tips—while giving you plenty of privacy to relax and enjoy the hut, hot tub, and countryside.
