If you choose to hold your legal ceremony at Lower Damgate Farm, this must be situated inside Dovedale Barn for it to be legally binding. After this ceremony if you would then like an outside blessing this is possible. This blessing can take place anywhere on the farm and we have lots of area to choose. There are open fields, mown paddocks and 20 acres of woods, stunning views as well as climbing to the top of the Hill overlooking the farm and the stunning views this offers. Alternatively, we have a wood at Bloor Pastures (Dovedale View). The wood is in a beautiful location with parking and overlooks, Dovedale, Ilam, Thorpe Cloud and Bunster, we are a little biased but we think the view over Ilam and Dovedale is one of the most spectacular views in the area.

Alternatively, our guests can marry at Ilam or Alstonefield Churches. Both these are situated in quiet quintessential villages, Ilam’s church is situated close to the river and nestled in the National Trust grounds of Ilam Hall and looks over to Thorpe Cloud and Dovedale. Alstonefield church is larger and looks out across the fields and valley with far reaching views directly over Dovedale and you can see Lower Damgate Farm in the distance.

Local Churches:

Ilam or Alstonefield Churches – Vicar Revd John Austerberry. Telephone 01335 310002 mob:07766 042754

email: revjohn.aiw@gmail.com

Getting married in one of our local churches is actually a simple procedure, if you have any connection with a Christian church in any way and are happy to visit on a monthly basis for banns being read (Ilam only has a monthly service) then our vicar is happy to marry you.

Ilam Church and Alstonefield Church are both just 1.5 miles away.

Ilam Church is within our parish and I think one of the prettiest churches in England, It is an Anglo-Saxon church and there are three Saxon crosses in the churchyard. There is also a trigonal section where Jess Watts Russell (who owned Ilam Hall) built a monument to honour his wife Mary. The church is just set back from the River in the grounds of NT Ilam Park with the views of Thorpe Cloud (entrance to Dovedale) in the distance; this church is an idyllic place to hold your wedding ceremony and gives the feel of being set in the times of Pride and Prejudice.

Alstonefield Church is larger and grander but nerveless a lovely old English village church and you can often hear the bells peeling away on a Sunday. Our vicar who resides over both the churches above lives in the New Rectory just next door to this church.

Both churches are stunning and well worth a visit; however, most of my guests marry in Ilam Church.

There is a Qualifying criterion for getting married in church if you can show the one of you:

  1. Has at any time lived in the Parish for a period of at least 6 months or

Was baptised (Christened) in the parish concerned or

Was prepared for confirmation in the parish or

Has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish for a period of at least six months **

  1. That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:

Has lived in the parish for a period of six months or

Has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish for a period of six months **

  1. That one of your parents or grandparents was married in the parish

** If you attend the Parish church’s usual services at least once a month for a minimum of six months you will qualify to get married in the church you attend the services in. However at least one of the couples, must have been baptised in the Christian faith to qualify

Catering

We pride ourselves on our guests being able to choose their own caterers without using any in house facilities. There are many caterers out there and the choice is extensive.

However, these on our list below have all agreed our Terms and Conditions and catered happily with the facilities available, therefore you will not need approval to book them. For any other caterer please feel free to source your own but if they are not on the list below, please do not book without prior approval.

We do not take any commission from any caterer as we feel it is immoral, however as a bartering system it is expected that caterers feed our staff. This is normal practice at weddings and should be at no cost to you.  All deliveries will need to be signed for by the hirer.

Please note that all the local supermarkets deliver to the farm. You will need to be here to sign for everything, but this is a popular option for guests, or use Peakdistrictdeli.com for local produce.

Nigel on 01335 342073 website: http://www.nigelsbutchers.co.uk

Nigel’s cater for private parties, and weddings and corporate events and only use locally sourced and high-quality meat. Hiring a hog roast is not necessarily as extravagant and expensive as many people think, because one hog weighing around 40 to 50 kilograms will easily provide 100 to 150 guest portions.

Alternatively try barbeque catering – especially if you are thinking of entertaining outside.  This would be a superb way to host your party as there are many options around what to cook on the barbeque and quite often the whole meal can be done on the barbeque.  Nothing smells quite as good as a meal on the good old barbie. Nigel’s offer a full outside catering service, including: Hog Roasts, Barbeques, Carvery and Buffets and  will  completely tailor to your needs –

Licenced Venue – Drinks and the Bar

Important – It is a legal requirement not to allow alcohol in the licenced room before your ceremony. Which is the whole barn! Therefore none of your guests can eat or drink in the barn before you are married. If this happens then legally the registrar will not be able to marry you. Therefore we ask you to plan accordingly.

We do Not charge corkage and you are welcome to provide your own welcome drinks and Table Wine. (we also have a good list of wines we can supply you

We provide a charity bar, normally after the welcome drinks have finished.

Please see our Cottages Helpful Information page for details on local beers and what we can provide in terms of alcohol to our guests.

Music

We are a rural and relaxed venue and music is a very important part of a wedding, however please be mindful that our relationship with our neighbours is very important and we ask that you be considerate to the type of music you provide.  Amplified Music must finish by 11.30pm, (Bands by 11pm) then a playlist till 11.30pm. Amplified Music is welcome on the day of your wedding only and not at other times in the barn. Acoustic music is welcome outside and we ask providers to be considerate to our neighbour. This does not affect the rights of the resident guests in the cottages

We have an electronic orange noise limiter installed in the barn which is set to the councils’ specifications. Please be assured that all good Bands, DJ’s as well as folk or Ceilidh bands do not have a problem with a limiter. We welcome all types of Bands as well as Cover, Ceilidh’s and Disco’s but if you are looking for a loud heavy rock, heavy bass event or even a full-blown Jazz band we are not for you as this type of music may not work well with a limiter. Please check with your music provider before booking and ensure there is enough time for them to set up and do a sound check.

If you are using someone who is not on our list below please check with us so we can ensure that all criteria are met and that they and we do not have a problem with the music set up. We work with you to ensure that the best sounds are appreciated by all and our musical criterion is detailed in our Terms and Conditions.

Geoff – The Slippery Hill Boys. Tel Enquiries: 07985 425932, email enqs@grassslipperyhill.co.uk

Website www.slipperyhill.co.uk

I think this group is brilliant – all sorts of music from soulful, close harmony songs to blisteringly fast bluegrass classics and ceilidh) The Slippery Hill Boys are a must for all lovers of Americana. There’s quite a bit of swapping around of instruments and they are amazingly fun and inspirational- it’s rare to have one highly talented banjo player in a band, let alone two, one of whom doubles as a fine flat picker. Mandolin and bass complete the line-up, with the occasional bit of penny whistle. Magical. But that’s not all. With an optional barn dance caller, The Slippery Hill Boys are the perfect barn dance band for any hoedown, hog roast, corporate event, Wild West party or wedding. Though the guys may think they’re in Kentucky, The Slippery Hill Boys are based in North Staffordshire, England.

Travel – Parking – Coaches and Taxis

LOWER DAMGATE FARM – DE6 2AD (we are ½ mile from this postcode) Lower Damgate Farm is a destination on both Google maps and Wayz so please put the farm name in.

If you have the APP WHAT3WORDS our 3m grid reference is SMILES. RELAXED. LOOMS for the cottages and MESSAGED. WEDDING. MANDOLIN for the Dovedale Barn and CARBON.DEVELOP. HEAVEN for Dovedale Animal Sanctuary

When travelling please note that SAT NAV is notoriously bad around here and can take you well out of your way and down impassable roads, so please look at a map and our directions which you can also find on our Website www.damgate.com.

It is important that you remember we are LOWER Damgate Farm and not our neighbours across the road!

For weddings and events, a ‘Travel plan’ is in operation which is part of our Planning Conditions. Parking is limited at wedding weekends apart from those camping where additional parking with a tent is allowed in our neighbour’s field.

When planning your day please allocate parking attendants who will need to be on the gate for the bus as well as to park those guests in the allocated places. Once guests are parked, we manage suppliers parking for you.

Due to the close proximity of additional accommodation it is expected for non-resident guests to use the bus system for travel to and from the farm. We work with our local coach company Warrington Coaches who are based a mile down the road in Ilam. This is not an expensive option and works really well and it enables your guests to drink and relax without the worry of driving. Warrington’s Coaches pick your guests up from their respective accommodation and bring them to the farm. At the end of the evening they will pick them up from the farm and take them back to their accommodation as all non-resident guests must be off site by 12am. This system works really well as it keeps everyone on site and your guests can drink and relax till it’s time to go home.

Warrington’s Coaches of Ilam – Keith Warrington on 01335 350204 info@warringtonscoaches.co.uk  www.warringtonscoaches.co.uk (Please see accommodation above)

We only use Warrington’s coaches as they know our system and they are local. They know the area very well and can work with you and us to manage the pick-ups as well as ensuring that all non-resident guests are off site in a timely manner.

Therefore, please email Keith directly and copy us in so that we can ensure your day runs smoothly for both you and your guests.

For Directions please ensure that guests aware that we are Lower Damgate Farm and not Damgate Farm across the road. This avoids confusion and upset to our neighbours. Thank you for your consideration

TAXIS and Cars

1.5 miles – Polly’s tea room – Milldale – This is a hole in the wall shop! No tables… just go and sit by the river

Really lovely ‘pit stop’ on the rive dove, half way point to home if walking down to the River via Hall dale then on to Milldale.  It’s a great little circular walk, easy downhill on the way and then an uphill climb from Milldale to home! From the tops there are stunning views so well worth doing this walk from the farm. You can stop off for hot sausage rolls, cobs, Ice cream, hot and cold drinks etc.  Plus, you’ll get to feed the ducks on the river, it’s fun!

1.5 miles – Wetton Tea rooms – walkable and next to the Royal Oak and by the church. They work together with the Pub so if one is closed the other is open. Also great for breakfasts and if you call in advance, they will cook and serve you breakfast ….

6 miles – Ashbourne – Impromptu – on Church Street. (Our favourite)

This is a little café come French restaurant nestled next to the pottery painting shop and surrounded by antique shops. However, it is our favourite and the food is amazing. All home cooked on site and if you are in Ashbourne one of the best café’s around.

Ashbourne – The Flower Shop Café – Market Place

The little tea room is in the market place and every plate, cup and saucer is vintage! It has a lovely feel with lots of yummy cakes. It is great for sitting and watching the world go around.

Right here – Casterne

For a circular walk from here take the path to Casterne following signs and at Casterne Farm (before the Hall) turn left picking up footpaths back to the farm.

Take the car and park at Weages bridge on the manifold trail. The walk left towards Wetton Mill. Thors Cave is about 1.5 miles on the right.

Bikes Trails and Hire

The Tissington Trail, High Peak Trail and Manifold Way are excellent for walking and biking. They each have their own particular beauty but all are good for children. Most cycle hire places have trailers on some bikes, for children too young to ride themselves

You can hire bikes at Ashbourne Cycle Hire (01335 343156) for the Tissington Trail (Situated at the Start of the Tissington Trail)

Parsley Hay Cycle Hire 01298 84493 on the A515 for the Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail. (Situated at the end of the Tissington Trail and the beginning of the High Peak Trail)

You can also Hire Bikes at Brown End Farm on the Manifold way in Waterhouses 01538 308313 or 07897 957206 (A52) towards Leek,

 The Tissington Trail.

You can hire bikes either at Ashbourne or at Pilsley Hay both on the Tissington trail which is a beautiful old railway track that goes from Ashbourne to Buxton and meets the High Peak Trail. The views are stunning and there are stops along the way. A tea room at Tissington and another at Pilsley Hay as well as many pubs and tea rooms in ashbourne.

The Manifold Way Trail – This is another beautiful old railway trail that runs from Waterhouses to Hulme End with a couple of tea rooms along the way at Wetton Mill and again in Hulme End

Drive to Wetton and pick up signs for the Manifold Way & Butterton, as you drive down a very steep hill you will see Thors Cave on your left. (It’s worth a walk!) To walk the Manifold Way, either park at the bottom of the hill or drive on 200yrds to Wetton Mill where you will find National Trust Tea Rooms open during the summer months and at weekends. You can also drive to either end of the track, that’s at Hulme End or Waterhouses and park in the car parks provided.

Slightly softer than the Tissington trail as it runs through the valleys rather than at the top, and it follows the manifold river. We would recommend some bike locks as you don’t want to carry your bike all the way to the top of Thors Cave.

   Local Villages

Ilam – 1.2 miles.  (eye-Lamb) This is our local village and it has been quoted by many as being one of the most picturesque villages in England.  It is home to the National Trust white peak estate and Ilam hall is now a youth hostel but used to be one of the grandest houses around. You can still visit and explore the gardens and there is a tea room and shop just behind the hall in the old stables.

Situated on the River manifold which feeds into the river Dove less than a mile away it is a beautiful setting for a picnic or a walk around paradise wood. St Bertram’s church which is set just below the hall has one of the oldest Celtic crosses and the history around here is deep and interesting, there is painting in the church that depicts the history of the village from Vikings to today…. The main village is lovely with alpine style cottages set against the backdrop of Bunster Hill, Thorpe Cloud and the steep and tumbling pastures. There is often an ice cream van in the village so go and say hello to Molly from us!

Milldale 1.3 miles Milldale is a delightfully hamlet right on the river dove and within walking distance from the farm.  It has the famous packhorse bridge and a much less visited village to explore the beautiful Dove Valley (there are also public toilets there!)  Stop by at Polly’s hole in the wall tea room and sit by the river and feed the ducks, it is a lovely half way stop on a walk from the farm or from the stepping stones. Free parking too!

Alstonefield – 1.5 miles situated high above the valleys of the Dove and the Manifold rivers and at the crossroads of several old packhorse routes. The main part of the village is set around the lovely village green with The George pub in the Center on a tiny village green. It is within easy distance of St. Peter’s church and the old Hall, and stretches along the Rakes; a name given to old lead mining sites, which occupies the ridgeway between the two valleys. The village also retains its ancient Tithe Barn, found behind the late 16th century rectory.

Wetton – 2 miles another great village to walk to, especially the Royal Oak pub and walking to the villages takes you over the tops of the manifold river with absolutely stunning views. Wetton is a beautiful village with the pub and tea rooms in the village hall and both close to the 14C church. It is situated high above the Manifold Valley and has stunning views and walks to the manifold Way and Thors cave. The remains of Anglo-Saxon settlements have been found in the area immediately around Wetton, although the earliest recorded reference to a village here is from the 12th Century.

Thorpe – 3 miles Literally at the gateway to Dovedale, as the river dove is just below this appealing little village which is set in some of the most beautiful countryside in England. You can climb up Thorpe Cloud where you can take in spectacular views across the peaks and then stop off at the Old Dog for some food.

Tissington – A perfect picture book village with beautiful cottages built around a noble old hall, fine church and duck pond. Tissington is still owned by the FitzHerbert family for over 400 years and it is their splendid Jacobean residence at the Hall that forms the centrepiece of the beautiful picture that is Tissington. The church of St Mary is raised up above the village and has a splendid Norman tower and has many fine memorials to the FitzHerbert family. Tissington Hall is open to visitors at certain times and there are tearooms, gift shops and craft shops, if you bump into Sir Richard say hello and that you are staying at Carolyn’s! Lower Damgate Farm The tradition of Well Dressing is said to have originated here and on Ascension Day five wells are decorated in a floral tribute to God for the gift of water. The Tissington Trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders passes by the village, where there is parking and a picnic site. The route follows the old Buxton to Ashbourne railway line passing through some spectacular scenery. The Limestone Way footpath goes through Tissington and there are good routes all around for ramblers.

Grindon – 2 miles – The road to Grindon is an adventure with stunning views down to Weages bridge where you can park and pick up the manifold way and along to Thors Cave.

Up above you will find Grindon which is a delightful moorland hill village strategically situated above the most interesting and exciting section of the Manifold Valley close to its junction with the Hamps and standing at 1,000 feet above sea level. The village has a long history and was mentioned in the Domesday Book as ‘Grindon’, meaning green hill. It was a staging post along the packhorse route from Ecton Hill, once the most productive copper mines in the country.

There is a car park and picnic spot beside the church and there are fine walks from Grindon down into both the Manifold and the Hamps; to Thor’s Cave, Wetton and Alstonefield

Hartington – 5 miles

An important village since the Middle Ages, Hartington was granted a market charter in 1203 by William De Ferres and became a major centre for a large rural population from the many isolated farms in the surrounding area.

A pretty village at the northern end of Dovedale, the village is set in some of the very best walking country.

Hartington’s past wealth and importance can be seen in the impressive stone cottages and houses around the village square and many ancient routes and trackways still meet in the village, although it has been years since a market has been held.

One of the most impressive buildings in the village is Hartington Hall, now the local YHA. Dating back to 1611, the manor house still retains much of its original character and is one of the most popular youth hostels in the Peak District, with a restaurant open to the public serving locally sourced produce.

The scenery in and around this charming old limestone village is outstanding. The village is centred around the spacious square, with the much-photographed duck pond as a focal point. There are some fine old buildings, including the Charles Cotton Hotel, St. Giles Church, the Market Hall and Hartington Hall. There is as a good selection of gift shops, cafes and 2pubs

Local Towns

Ashbourne (south), Leek (West), Bakewell (East) Matlock (East)and Buxton (North) are our local towns. They are all different and each has its own charm and a wealth of things to do

Buxton – famous for its traditional roman spa and the start of the moors with stunning walks and views, plus Pools Cavern is there and Go Ape! And the new Cavendish Spa. This town has two sections, the market place is the first part of the shopping that people come to, do not be put off as the Pavilion Gardens and Baths as well as s the Old Opera house and another area of shops is below the market place and is lovely… so carrying on straight past the market place and explore. This is a slightly bigger town with lots on offer and it’s lovely. However, as the Highest Town in England take a coat! Buxton is a town full of surprises; there’s history, culture and countryside all rolled into one. The famous fresh spring water, wonderful views, Buxton Opera House, amazing caves and charming cafes all come together to make a town that is nothing if not unique.

Matlock is another popular town to visit in Derbyshire – with Riber castle in the distance and the River Derwent at your feet, having a relaxing stroll around; this town is an ideal setting to make some great memories in.  Visiting our very own Dovedale Animal Sanctuary  https://damgate.com/dovedale-animal-sanctuary/

Dovedale Animal Sanctuary at Lower Damgate Farm was set up in 1996 and continues to provide a forever loving home to a number of rescued farm animals, from Alpacas, Goats, Horses, Ponies, Sheep, Ducks, Chickens and Geese, plus some other little critters like Hedgehogs, Ferrets and Field Mice! As well as our dogs and cats!

All our animals have a story to tell, so as well as rescuing them we also work with every animal from the moment they arrive spending lots of time with them, giving them food, love and cuddles so they get to know us and trust people again. Our Holiday Cottage and Wedding guests are welcome to go and say hello to the animals as they all love company and are very inquisitive.

If you would like to help at feeding time then please come and find us either at the farmhouse or around the farm. Our animals are tame and gentle enough to interact with and will happily accept a cuddle or carrot from you! Though please be careful as they do get excited if you have food on you! However please also be aware that our animals are not domestic pets so be mindful and careful when around them. Children must be supervised at all times and interaction is at your own risk.

Our guests are also welcome to go and collect eggs from the hen house or come to the farmhouse where if we may have some or please look in the fridge in the Landry room.

(Eggs are not always available as laying in dependant on times of year and the weather!) Many guests ask if we re-home our animals after being with us. The answer is no, as they are safe and happy at the farm, this becomes their forever home and it would be unfair to move them.

Please enjoy your time at the farm with the animals and we look forward to getting to know you too

Local Walks

One of the things about living where we do at Lower Damgate Farm is that there are stunning walks straight from the farm. We are literally situated between the river Dove and Manifold and both are a short stroll away. These are popular attractions so if you would like to go off the beaten track a little bit, please call me or arrange for me to show you the way!

You will find a big ordinance survey map in the games room where you can plan your walks. However, we are always happy to point you in the right direction to a local attraction or one of our good local pubs!

National Trust Park at Ilam – just 1m down the Hill from our farm

Ilam Park is often missed and well worth a visit whilst you are staying at the farm. It is part of the National Trust and White Peak Estate. There are often activities and adventure things to do at Ilam Park and The National Trust rangers put on activities every weekend and you can join in and enjoy the experience. On Fridays there is often an open walk with a ranger day and these activities are free.

There is also the Manifold Tea room which serves yummy cakes and Molly’s ice cream van is often in the village on a warm sunny day.

There is lots to do at Carsington and not just Sailing, Kayaking, windsurfing or power boating (though you can do those too) and in high season all water activities need to be booked in advance as it gets very busy. Carsington is also a wildlife heaven and bird watching paradise with a little fishing thrown in as well…. though I prefer the river Dove for that…You can walk, ride (hire bikes) shop, lunch, picnic and relax there whilst taking in the view of one of the largest lakes (reservoir) in the Peaks. Carsington also offer Fishing days and is one of the premier competition lakes in the country. (Trout Master)

 Fishing on the Dove

Please call Rupert Hignett on 01335 310389 where you may be able to hire a day ticket for a three mile stretch of the Dove from Milldale to Beresford’s dale. Those tickets are very limited but sometimes there are guest rods for hire. This is one of the best fishing areas on the Dove.

Day Tickets are also available from Hartington Stores in Hartington on selective parts of the River Dove and Manifold River.

Climb a Tree:

Go-Ape: Buxton. Website: www.goape.co.uk or Tel: 0845 643 92 15.

You need a head for heights and I loved it. You climb up into the trees and attach yourself to zip wires. Under 14’s need to be accompanied by an adult. The idea is to get from one end of the park to the other without touching the ground and using muscles you didn’t realise you had, you’ve seen monkeys do it, well that’s about it you become the monkey! The final highlight is flying through the air on a zip wire, exhilarating.

Water Park:

Alton Towers: Water Park Caribbean lagoon – www.altontowers.com Part of Alton Towers above though situated in the Splash landings Hotel away from the theme park.  It is a little like oasis, water world or centre parcs and is like a tropical island with lots to do both inside the dome and out, swim wear is a must. Splash landings claim the longest water ride in the country as well as flumes and water rapids. The hot tub is nice.
